Although I am an ACH expert today, I must say my first hands-on experience with ACH was not a pleasant one. I was in my early 20s and had been working at a bank for a few years. My Senior Vice President approached me with the ACH Rules book in hand and asked me to learn it, as we had some major staffing issues in the department. I looked at her, I’m sure with a deer in the headlights look, and asked her what this big, intimidating book was she had given me. She said, “it’s all about ACH…like direct deposit.” She also handed me the minimal procedures book we had with a username and password to access the system. I like a good challenge, but this was a BIG CHALLENGE!
Somehow, I made it through those first few days creating files, doing returns and handing the file off for processing to the Federal Reserve. I had no idea if I was doing it right, but I was doing something. I began reading the ACH Rules, trying to figure out what it all meant, but I was still clueless. I needed help understanding the terms and concepts, who was responsible for what, when things HAD to be done and what was the “right way” to do things. Having all this information thrown at you at once, and trying to understand it on your own, can feel overwhelming
Years later I joined the EPCOR team, learned more about ACH and other payment systems and wanted to share our passion for ACH. We realized learning these concepts on your own is difficult and feels impossible. So, we created a class called ACH Camp to help kick start our members’ ACH journeys and assist our members in building a solid foundation that will support them throughout their careers as payments professionals. This class became a hit with our members, who appreciated the back-to-basics sessions and easy-to-understand explanation of ACH.
All of this to say, Virtual ACH Camp is back by popular demand this year! Whether you are new to the industry or just want to have a refresher on the basics, this class is for you. As a trainer, this session is fun for me too and I always look forward to these offerings. I hope to virtually see you there!
