It's a scam!

By Rayleen Pirnie posted 07-30-2012 15:46

“HUH?!? Who falls for this stuff!” was my exact statement (out loud, to myself, glad no one was around) when I read the alert distributed this morning by the BBB.  Someone falls for these scams (even though some are SO OBVIOUS) or criminals wouldn’t continue the endeavor.

The BBB announced today that it has joined Walmart, Target, and a few others whose name is being used in an email scam promising gift cards.  “People nationwide are receiving emails informing them that (the) Better Business Bureau is giving away $1,000 Visa gift cards.” HUH? The BBB giving away $1,000 Visa Gift Cards? Oh come on! That has SCAM written all over it. But one does have to wonder just how many people will in fact fall for this new round.

So let’s shelf our natural cynicism for a moment and play a game – The rules are simple – post what email based scams you’re seeing in your area and what methods your institution uses to educate consumers (and employees, let’s not forget sometimes even our employees fall for this stuff). How can we help our community navigate email landmines that can lead to data collection, future scams, ID theft, Account Takeover, and more.

Who wants to play…What email based scams have you seen recently that made YOU go HUH? And what has your institution done to help spread the message – IT’S A SCAM!

I actually received a text message stating that I had won a $1,000 gift card for Target. I thought it was odd since it made reference to an entry in which I had not made. The website looks legitimate with the Target logo and dog. Don't fall for it!

I received the AT&T scam email today too - claiming I owe $618 by Monday. I don't have AT&T service! The sender email is different, and this one, while claiming it will take you to at&t's website actually jumps you to vogantube.com
Classic phishing - general greeting (doesn't use my name, has "Dear Esteemed Customer" - what a joke) and an implied "threat" (aka, if you don't do something, we're going to charge you!)
It's been filed appropriately - in the trash.

Funny that right after you post this, I get an email this morning supposedly from "Jane Wall" at ATT about my Home Service online bill being ready to be viewed. The funny thing is, Jane Wall's email address is a robot from craigslist. And, I don't even have a home phone! Another interesting piece of the email was the fact that when you hover over the links to the "ATT Website," the actual address directed to you to some homes 4 hearts site... Don't fall for it if you get it! :)

Huh?, it's a scam!
Today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (with an *@aol.com address) sent me an email that the FBI is working with the Nigerian Government and the United Nations to give me the $10.5 million dollars I won in the lottery. And... I can have the full amount on an ATM card. Wow!
I can't believe all 3 government agencies want to help me. This is nothing new to those seasoned in the payments industry, but had this email gone to some of my family members...I start to worry.
Remember to education your customers, family and friends about scams.
