12 Scams of Christmas

By Rayleen Pirnie posted 12-24-2013 09:53

I thought it appropriate that we finish out the year with a look at the top 12 scams in circulation right now, but of course I can't just list them! That's not fun. So, sing it with me!

On the 12th day of Christmas a crook did give to me, Microsoft calling to fix my computer virus!

Eleven Man-in-the-Middle attacks that scammed me out of money.

Ten Infected websites.

Nine scammers skimming data.

Eight wi-fi probes.

Seven fake free wi-fis.

Six drive-by downloads.

Fiiiivvveee pirated downloads.

Four current news scams.

Three fake upgrades.

Two infected virus checkers.

And a Christmas-themed phishing email that stole my identity.

Very nice! If you want to learn more about any of these scams, please visit BBC Technology for an easy to understand, brief definition.

Also be sure to check out our blogs which cover topics like "It's NOT Microsoft Calling!" And of course we'll highlight some of these nasties during EPCOR's 2014 Quarterly Fraud and Security Reviews.

Happy a wonderful Holiday season, and may you and your loved ones avoid the "gifts" of this song.
