SnapChat Users Beware

We all love Apps – games, cool gadgets we can’t live without like weather conditions when you travel (or is that just me?), and even Apps that give you more advice than you ever actually wanted to know. We’re addicted to Apps. It’s ok; just remember that not all Apps are looking out for your best interests. Throw in a promise of “something for nothing” and the less-than-cynical may fall for it.

App infections aren't anything new, but we’re hearing of a new method criminals are using through Snapchat that has a lot of people chatting about new computer or phone infections. That’s not good.

So here’s the skinny:

You sneak a peek at your Snapchat and find a new snap, aka visual message, from someone you don’t know.

The snap is a graphic (see image at left) saying you are "Today's Winner."

To claim your prize, you need to visit the website. Who doesn’t love free stuff?

You go to the website and it asks for your username. After you enter that, the next page instructs you to choose from a list of smartphone apps and download one. You can supposedly claim your prize after you do this.

The problem? Snapchat isn’t running a sweepstakes and you’re not really a winner. In fact, you probably just downloaded an App that infected your device which can harvest not only your personal information, but also any credit card numbers, saved information, and online banking activities you conduct.

The Better Business Bureau is urging Snapchat users to use caution with a few tips. We have included a few additional ones:

1. You can't win a contest you didn't enter: You need to buy a ticket or complete an application to enter a contest or lottery. Be careful if you've "been selected as a winner" for a contest you've never heard of.

2. Change your settings: Set Snapchat so you can only receive snaps from those on your friends list. This will block most spam. Click here for more information.

3. Report spam accounts to Snapchat.

4. Use official App stores: Only download apps through the official app store on your phone, not alternative markets or through messages from people you don't know.

5. Be wary of unexpected texts, emails and other messages that contain links or attachments. Never click on links or open files from unfamiliar sources.

Please share with colleagues and family, including kids using Snapchat. Happy Snapping!
