The highly anticipated launch of the FedNow® Service has come and gone, with the service blasting off on Thursday, July 20. Now that it’s live, you may be wondering – what happens now? It depends on where you are in the process.

As of launch, 35 early adopting banks and credit unions, as well as the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, are ready with instant payments capabilities via the FedNow® Service. In addition, 16 service providers are ready to support payment processing for banks and credit unions. Check out the list of participants and service providers here. Ongoing, the Federal Reserve is committed to working with the more than 9,000 banks and credit unions across the country to support the widespread availability of this service for their customers over time.

Thousands of financial institutions are working toward implementation, and it’s important for your financial institution to start making decisions regarding your future plans.

Still on the fence regarding instant payments? A good place to start in the decision-making process is looking into opportunities for your organization. Financial institutions can analyze market trends, customer demands and competitor offerings to identify areas to not only retain account holders but grow and differentiate themselves from competitors. Many financial institutions are also finding ways to use instant payments to their advantage in lowering costs and more effectively managing their cash position.

If you have made the decision to move forward with instant payments, here are some steps you can take to get started:

·       Stay informed. Take time to explore all the educational resources and get a front-row seat to news and insights by joining the FedNow® Service Community.

·       Identify use cases. Analyze market trends, customer demands and what your competitors are offering. Also, check out the Use Case Repository developed by the Faster Payments Council on our Instant Payments Resource Center webpage.

·       Plan. Develop a plan that outlines important milestones, timelines for meeting those milestones, conducting due diligence, determining risk appetite and deciding whether you want to build your own infrastructure or if you want to utilize a Third-Party Service Provider.

·       Coordinate with vendors. If you plan to utilize a Third-Party Service Provider, ensure they are prepared for the FedNow® Service and can provide the necessary support you need.

·       Train staff. Educate your staff about the FedNow® Service, how payments are processed, changes to existing processes, how to educate account holders and risk mitigation practices.

·       Test. Conduct thorough testing and validation of your systems and processes to ensure proper processing and address any issues or gaps.

·       Communicate with account holders. Talk to your account holders about the upcoming changes, added benefits and how they can leverage this new payment system. As with any payment system, account holder education is the best offense to fighting fraud.
