As a retired police officer, SWAT team member, detective and corporate security for a large bank, I find myself practicing my situational awareness of any environment that I find myself in.

It’s become a habit and while I realize this practice is due to all of the training I’ve had, there are strategies others can learn that may help them survive a volatile situation.

Join me this May at EPCOR Payments Conference- Spring 2016 for my session, Active Shooter: Awareness & Incident Response to Workplace Violence.

Active shooters in workplaces are often a current or former employee, customer, or someone known to an employee, such as a spouse.

All employees need to be educated on how to observe the warning signs associated with potentially violent behavior. It’s rare that an employee will “snap” and become violent without showing any warning signs beforehand.

In this session, learn how to maintain your situational awareness wherever you go. I’ll share how you can visualize your possible response (what you’d do in any given violent situation) so that you have a general plan of action—no matter where you are.

We’ll discuss indicators of potential violence and I’ll explain why you should report any and all suspicious or potentially violent behavior. Learn what to do if you are caught up in an active shooter situation and how law enforcement will respond to the incident.

Sometimes there’s nothing you can do to survive a shooting; you’re in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

But, you may get a chance to act, and will only have seconds to figure out what to do. Learn how to prepare so that, in this moment, you can protect your life and the lives of others.
